What Is AI Visibility? GEO, AEO, and Getting Recommended by ChatGPT

AI visibility is whether your business gets named when someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or Google's AI who to hire. It goes by several names, and the work behind all of them is the same.

In short

The short answer

AI visibility means being named in the answer an AI assistant gives when someone asks for a recommendation in your category and city. It is also called generative engine optimization (GEO), answer engine optimization (AEO), AI SEO, or LLM SEO. The industry has not settled on one term, and the underlying work does not change between them.

It matters because a growing share of people now ask an assistant instead of scrolling a results page, and because the answer names two or three businesses rather than ten links. Being fourth in an AI answer does not exist.

How an AI engine actually picks a business

An AI assistant does not consult a ranking. When someone asks for a plumber in Jupiter, the model breaks the question into several searches, retrieves live results from a search index and partner data sources, reads what comes back, and writes an answer naming the businesses it could verify.

ChatGPT leans heavily on Bing's index plus partner location data from sources like Foursquare and Yelp. Google's AI Overviews and Gemini build local answers primarily on Google Business Profile data and Google's index. Perplexity and Claude use their own search partners. The engines differ, but the requirement is identical: the business has to be findable, consistent, and corroborated in the sources that engine trusts.

That is why AI visibility is mostly an off-page problem. Your website matters, but the listings, the reviews, and the independent mentions matter more, because the engine is looking for confirmation from sources that are not you.

Why ranking on Google does not transfer

This surprises people who have invested in SEO. Research has consistently found that only a minority of businesses winning Google's local map pack also appear in AI recommendations, and that the sources AI engines cite overlap only slightly with Google's first page.

The reason is structural. Google's local algorithm weighs proximity heavily, and proximity is meaningless to an AI answering a typed question. What the engines weigh instead is whether your information is consistent across sources, whether independent sites corroborate it, and whether your reviews suggest you are worth recommending.

The factors that decide whether you get named

Data consistency across every source the engines read: Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Foursquare, Yelp, Apple Business Connect, and the directories specific to your industry. Conflicting information is the single most common reason a business is skipped entirely.

Third-party mentions. Independent sources outweigh your own website, and in AI search, mentions function the way links did in traditional SEO. One credible local press mention or a genuine best-of list placement moves answers more than fifty directory submissions.

Review depth and sentiment. Analyses of AI local recommendations show they cluster around businesses with strong ratings and substantial review volume. A thin review profile is disqualifying regardless of everything else.

Answer-shaped content. Pages that open with a direct, quotable answer to the question in their title get lifted into responses. Answers buried in the fourth paragraph do not.

Machine readability. Server-rendered HTML, LocalBusiness and FAQ schema, an llms.txt file, and a robots.txt that permits GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, and Google-Extended. Many website templates block these by default, which silently opts a business out entirely.

How to check your own AI visibility tonight

Ask ChatGPT for the best business in your category and city, using the exact phrasing a customer would. Note every business named. Run it three times, because the answers vary between sessions.

Repeat in Google AI Mode, Gemini, and Perplexity. The lists will differ, because the source data differs. Record all of them.

Search your business name on Bing. If Bing does not know you, ChatGPT's live lookups probably will not either.

Look yourself up on Foursquare and Yelp. Most owners have never claimed either, and both feed AI answers.

Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and look for the AI crawler names above. If they are disallowed, that is your first fix.

View your homepage source and search for a sentence of your own copy. If it is not in the raw HTML, your content is being rendered by JavaScript and AI crawlers may not see it at all.

What to fix first

Claim Bing Places and Foursquare. Both are free, both take under an hour, and both feed the engine most people are asking. This is the highest return per minute available in local marketing right now.

Make every listing identical. Same business name, same address formatting, same phone, same hours, everywhere.

Open your robots.txt to AI crawlers and add an llms.txt summarizing what you do and linking your key pages.

Rewrite your most important pages so each opens with a direct answer to the question its title asks, and attach FAQ schema.

Start earning mentions: your chamber, your industry association, local press, and the credible best-of lists in your category.

Build review depth, steadily and permanently. It is slow and it is the factor most correlated with being recommended.

What does not work

Generating pages at scale to cover more keywords. Google's scaled content abuse policy targets exactly this, and AI engines filter thin sources independently.

Buying mentions from link networks or fake review services. Both are detectable and both create liabilities that outlast whatever short-term gain they produce.

Assuming this replaces SEO. AI visibility sits on top of a strong Google presence, particularly for Gemini and AI Overviews, which read Google Business Profile directly.

Questions we get

Is AI visibility the same as SEO?

No, though they overlap. SEO gets your website ranked in a list of links. AI visibility gets your business named inside an answer. The engines pull from different sources, weigh reviews and independent mentions more heavily, and favor content structured as direct answers.

Can anyone guarantee ChatGPT will recommend my business?

No, and treat that promise as a warning sign. AI answers vary between sessions and change as the engines update. What can be done is making a business the most verifiable, best-reviewed, most-mentioned option in its category, which is what the engines consistently reward.

How long does it take?

Data-source corrections can change answers within weeks. Being named consistently across multiple engines usually takes three to six months of mentions and review building.

Do I need this if my customers are older?

Adoption is broader than most people assume, and Google's AI Overviews appear above ordinary search results for everyone, whether or not they sought out an AI tool.

What does it cost?

Programs at Bujify start at $697 per month and are usually paired with local SEO, because the two share foundations.
